COVERING WAR IN MOVIES
Points to remember while covering war that may be used while directing a film based on war
War coverage is the reporting done in a warzone, the person who does this reporting are
called a A war correspondent. They are journalists who usually cover these story first hand.
War reporting can be very dicey but however it has its learning’s and experiences.
Something’s to keep in mind while covering a war that can later be used to direct a film based on war l are :-
1) You cannot be biased - If you are a war correspondent of a third nation, and you a reporting a
war, you should not be biased, as the way you project your information while determine the
outcome of your movie. You must show the story from both sides of the nation. You must
report the outcome, the behavior and reasons from both nations. A good war correspondent
never takes sides even though he might believe that what a nation might be doing is wrong.
Being biased will firstly change your story to the rest of the world, as only those who agree
with your story will find the movie in correct terms and others will just disregard it. You will lose
audience, you might even create conflict by incorrect reporting.
2) Making a film on war gives you great power, that must be used properly - Creating a film on
war gives you great power as you have a chance to show the movie based on how you wish to,
you should however always show it correctly. During war reporting if you wish to show
something in bad light you must put it in such a way, that it does not affect the opposing
nation greatly. For example in the movie, Life in Baghdad, The CNN war correspondents used
a phrase in such a way that it did not lead to them being kicked out of the nation but however
it conveyed their message.
I quote “ In the rest of the world they’re called hostages, but here they’re called ‘guests’. “
3) You must use multiple sources - Using multiple sources, interviews and stories of different
people highly helps in validating the scenario in the location and helps you learn about what it
was like before you entered the location. It also teaches you about how they’ve gone about
their life style ever since the war and before and gives you more resources for directing your
movie. It also helps in adding a more personal touch to the movie for the audiences as that is
what many of them would have experienced. In the movie Life in Baghdad, The CNN war
correspondents use interviews to authenticate their information.
4) Do not change the story, report only what is true - No matter if changing the story makes it
more exciting or is bound to give you more cash or TRP, you must not change it or add false
information to it. Adding false information or fictionist stuff will only create trouble causing
you to be accused of being a liar, taking the war as a joke and eventually it may lead to conflict
as the incidents never happened.
5) Add a personal touch - Report and add a personal touch of what you experienced while
covering the war scene and add it while directing movie. Personal experience is the best
experience to show to an audience as it is the experience that is most attachable with the people.
You learn a lot and everything you have seen can be best put by you itself in the correct way
while directing your movie.
